I use the Variable Speed Ramping tool here and have a shortcut to automatically convert 60 fps clips to 24 fps and get that slow motion. For projects where I’m unsure of how the final edit will look, I shoot 60 fps to give me the option of slow motion and more range with speed ramping. Slow down clips to see if I want to use slow motion.Sorting through my “Favorite” clips and and dropping it into my Primary timeline. It’s basically like listening to a song and tapping along to the major beats. I like to work with the beats and lyrics in the song, so I’ll go through and do a rough marking of where the major beats fall, using the M shortcut. It depends on whether I want to front load the time spent getting “acquainted” with my available footage. I’ll do this if there’s a lot of footage to sort through and the clips are longer in length, but sometimes I also just go through the clips and favorite the entire clip and skim through them later when I’m editing. Skim through my clips, select my rough In and Out points and mark that segment as “Favorite”.You also get 2 extra free months when signing up with my referral link. They have a great selection and a reasonable annual subscription. I use Artlist to license royalty free music for most of my projects. My workflow for the film looked like this. When the configuration was done, I began working on a film about my road trip from San Francisco to Vancouver called “Coast.” It would incorporate most of the general techniques I use in my travel films like slow motion, variable speed ramping, beat synchronization, and color grading. Shift + B – Set Variable Speed Ramp (Used to create variable speed in a clip without blading)ĬMD + S – Auto Retime Clip (Used to automatically retime 60 fps to 24 fps timeline)Īlt + CMD + Up – Lift From Primary TimelineĬMD + Shift + CTRL + 8 – Reset Audio Volume My Start To Finish Workflow And yet, it was possible, after a few trial and error reconfigurations. It’s a long list and despite the 14 wheels, dials, knobs, and buttons on the TourBox, I had my reservations that I could configure them all to the device in an intuitive way. Can You Edit A Film Without A Keyboard?īelow is a list of basically ALL the keyboard shortcuts I use in FCP X and the rough order of how often I use the them. While I edit mostly in FCP X, you can do the same in Adobe Premiere AND WITH almost any other program on your computer. I’ll take you through my process and why I see the TourBox as an essential time-saving tool that will sit on my desk at home and taken with me when I’m editing on the road. The answer to both turned out to be a resounding YES, but with a couple of obvious and logical caveats – you still need a keyboard to type words and numbers into a title, for example. Could I edit an entire short film WITHOUT my keyboard, using only the TourBox and my mouse? And if so, would it be something I would do given the choice. Much to my surprise and delight, after an hour of customizing and testing, I was able to map the TourBox to trigger all my most frequently used shortcuts. Having tested out and configured my TourBox controller console to speed up my workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop, I knew it could do something similar for Final Cut Pro X, but similar devices I’ve used in the past have left me wanting. So, what happens when you try to edit an entire project without your keyboard? It’s the type of muscle memory that saves you a lot of time from having to hunt through layers of menus and tiny icons. As a film editor, you learn early on just how essential keyboard shortcuts are to the process.

As an indie game dev you are faced with the challenge of building bigger and richer worlds with smaller teams and limited resources. I spent about two weeks with the headset using it anywhere from 1-3 hours a day, and the battery level only dropped about 25%. Others in this space, like the Steelseries Arctis 9 Wireless or the Audeze Penrose will only net you 15 to 20 hours in comparison. Even with that caveat, the Cloud Alpha Wireless could drop a full 100 hours and still be twice the length of its nearest competitor, the GSP 370 from Epos Audio, rated at 100 hours. While that was usually loud enough for me, you can expect the battery life to decline the louder you listen. That “or so” is important, because, like most tech companies, HyperX quotes its most optimistic figures, based on listening at 50% volume. At a “meager” three hours a day, you’ll only need to recharge once every three months or so. At twelve hours a day, that’s roughly 25 days of gaming. That extensive battery life means you could play non-stop for just shy of two weeks before needing to recharge. At 300 hours, it’s not just the longest-lasting gaming headset, it’s one of the longest-lasting wireless headphones period. The Cloud Alpha Wireless’s standout feature is its incredible battery life. What We Like Recharges are few and far between It’s a well-thought-out package that’s easy to use and shows clear lessons learned from HyperX’s years of making other wireless headsets. Each of the controls has different surfaces, too, so they’re easy to tell apart by touch, saving you from taking the headset off to see which control is where. On the right earcup is a volume roller with notches that let you feel each step. Tapping the mic button mutes it while holding it turns on a live monitor, so you can hear your voice inside the headset. On the back of the left ear cup are buttons for power and microphone mute. The shift to wireless demands onboard controls, and HyperX has an efficient arrangement that’s easy to decipher. You can’t rotate the cups to lay flat around your neck, which is a shame, but they do tilt to create a better seal and block out surrounding noise. It’s robustly built with the effective use of durable plastics and metal in the band and outer ear cups for added durability. It features a classic red and black colorway: black making up most of the headset with red accents in the stitching and aluminum headband. The Cloud Alpha Wireless is no exception. The Cloud Alpha line has always been well-made and stylish with that special kind of gamer-chic. Virtual Surround Sound: DTS Headphone:X Spatial Audio.Device compatibility: PC, PlayStation 5.Drivers: 50mm dual-chamber dynamic drivers. Here’s a quick rundown of the headset’s main specs: With that flexibility in mind, it’s all the more surprising that the headset doesn’t support Bluetooth or analog audio, so PC and PlayStation 5 are all you’ll be able to swap to. Its 2.4GHz dongle also allows it to be cross-compatible between PC and PlayStation 5, easily allowing you to swap platforms to suit your mood. There’s no other headset that comes close, so if you dread running dry in the middle of a match, this is the best choice available right now. Wireless battery life is easily the star of the show with up to 300 hours per charge. The wireless model carries all of these traits through, including the dual-chamber audio system, which separates the bass from the midrange and treble to enhance clarity, and its propensity for trapping heat but otherwise being comfortable to wear across gaming sessions. The appeal of the Cloud Alpha line has historically lain with its stellar balance of great audio quality, comfort, and clear comms. Though HyperX is no stranger to wireless audio, the Cloud Alpha Wireless is the first in the series that has earned its wings and learned to fly. In 2019, the company added surround sound to the mix with the Cloud Alpha S, and proceeded to re-release both in multiple new colors ever since. The original debuted in 2017 and was widely acclaimed, including by me, for its exceptional audio quality, driven by its dual-chamber driver system. The Cloud Alpha Wireless is the third entry in HyperX’s Cloud Alpha line of gaming headsets. There’s no other headset that comes close to this level of battery life. Don't tell, but the prices were so good we picked up doubles of our fave shirts, in case one gets ruined by all the drool. Boots for which we once paid $395 walked out the door for less than a hundred a $500 sports coat we once eyed longingly went home with us for $95, hot damn and pearl-snap shirts that usually go for somewhere 'round the $165 mark were priced to move, move, move at $38, which doesn't even take into account the $24 cashmere sweater and $18 tie and $38 linen pants also hanging in the closet, lucky us. Because, see, that was before we finally got our sorry, retail-paying asses over to the Billy Reid warehouse sale, which occurs, more or less, every February and August, when the clothes go for pennies on the pennies on the dollar. Sorry, we were so totally wrong about that. In last year's best-of issue, we awarded Billy Reid's sole Dallas location, in NorthPark Center, the award for Best Dressy Men's Clothing Store We Can Afford. Sorry if that's a bit rambling, but we spent a recent weekend in there, and the mind still reels just as the ears still ring from all the videogame demos and screening stations and classic rock coalescing into a single, impenetrable wall of noise. Really, imagine: GameStop meets Tower Records meets Blockbuster meets Collectors Records meets CD World meets Apple Store meets Movie Trading Company meeting a former Michaels location also stockpiled with rock T-shirts, posters and, no kiddin', cheaply priced vinyl through which collectors sort through every weekend. But their salespeople are upfront about their Wii empire: They buy high and sell low in order to attract folks to the inventory of videogames, new and used, which are but one small piece of an enormous, glorious puzzle that, no kiddin', might just be the future of idiocracy in the best possible sense. Right, the Wii-still hard to find-retails for more than $300. Says the Web site, it's "the country's crunkest place to buy and sell new and used movies, music, videogames," where, so happens, they buy and sell used Wiis for $260 without pocketing a dime. Not gonna lie: If you've never been, the idea sounds both sketchy and cheesy. No music snobs either you'll get the same treatment whether you walk up to the counter clutching Death Cab for Cutie buttons, Neutral Milk Hotel on vinyl or Justin Timberlake on CD. Living up to its name, fully loaded fixtures of CDs line the length of the store, and the back wall houses the racks of vinyl LPs and 7-inches, of which they stock a fat selection of rare and hard-to-find indie, hardcore and punk releases. (Unless, of course, you have a hard time deciding which flair you can't live without.) Last year, the independently owned shop celebrated its fifth anniversary. With a rotating supply of nearly 1,500 different ones to choose from, expressing your self via pinback becomes a simple task. Shoppers can flaunt their fondness for everything from a favorite indie band or glam icon to an '80s TV show or classic horror flick. Oh, and buttons-cannot forget the buttons. Tucked in a strip mall just off Texas Highway 190 in Carrollton, CD Addict carries new and used records, CDs, videos, DVDs and posters. Living north of the dial, some of us need to find a dealer a bit closer to home to get our fix. It's not like you need more than one try to guess who's going win best record store, but not every music junkie can reside within walking distance of Greenville Avenue. The model we recommend requires no twisting, as it has the ratcheting feature. Handle – Since you will be holding on to the handle and twisting it the majority of the time, you’ll want this to be very comfortable, with a nice grip. If the blade is weak, it will tear the fruit rather than cutting it, leaving you with a lot of ripped pieces and a big mess, with a lot of wasted juice. It’s a little hard to tell before using, so we suggest reading reviews before you make a purchase. The plastic models don’t last long, usually around 1-2 uses, and aren’t a good option for the environment as they take a very long time to break down after they’ve been tossed in the trash.īlade – This should be very sharp, and of good quality. Material – This tool should be made out of stainless steel, as the fruit it will be used on is very tough, and you’ll want the product to be able to handle a little force. When looking for the best product, below are a few things we considered before making our decision, and we suggest you do the same. Things You Should Look at When Choosing A Model Users love how strong and sturdy this model is, and highly recommend this over the plastic versions you can also buy online.Ĭheck the price and read all of the customer reviews on Amazon now. They deemed it a very efficient product, especially when compared to others in this category. Push the release button to pop off the handle and flip over the blade, and slide the rings off the tool.Ī few users tested this tool to see if it wasted any of the fruit, and found that very little was wasted. With one hand on the fruit and the other on the tool, pull up and remove the fruit.ĥ. Next, place the blade in the middle and, using the ratchet, you’ll move the blade down to the point you measured.Ĥ. Then, using the measurement feature, figure out how far down you need to go (this will prevent piercing the bottom, like I mentioned above)ģ. First, you simply cut off the top of the fruit.Ģ. If you haven’t seen one of these in action, allow me to explain the process. It’s stainless steel and comes with a sharp blade that effortlessly cuts through the fruit without making a mess. This product is dishwasher safe and compact enough that it can be stored in your utensil drawer. The empty shell can then be re-filled with fresh fruit for a nice centerpiece on your dinner table. The measurement feature is also very nice, as it prevents you from piercing the bottom of the shell (very easy to do once you get started). If you can relate, and have been passing on the fresh, whole variety due to the intense concentration and tenacity required to cut into the thing, or the price of the pre-cut stuff, then let me tell you, there is a better option out there… However, pre-cut and pre-packaged fresh fruit can be rather expensive, so what’s a pineapple lover to do? With the prickly outer layer and the hard core, I’ve skipped buying fresh in the past because of time constraints, and because of the complicated and messy process it can involve. I think you’ll agree when I say pineapples can be pretty hard to cut into. Pineapples are one of the most delicious fruits on the planet, and they’re also rather unique.įor example, did you know that they grow in the ground on a plant rather than up in a tree, and take three years to mature? Standard video game fare, but The Pathless manages to be sparse and winningly odd all the same. You have to purify a bunch of corrupted guardians who take the form of mega-animals, and then tackle the baddy who's behind all this, travelling upwards from one huge stretch of land to the next as you go. Haven't they always? You play a lone archer in this vast wilderness tasked with putting things back together again. The world is in danger and the ancient gods have fallen. Availability: Out November 12th on PC and PS4 and iOS as part of Apple Arcade, out on November 19th on PS5 in the UK (November 12th in the US). And inside? You know, the Pathless is alright. A bright scarlet blot on a cold blue landscape. And when I emerged again, the red storm that stalks you across these huge maps was waiting right outside, right below me, a boiling angry Jupiter, threads of toxic cloud churning within it. I would have wandered up here for no reason at all. I went inside and did some video game stuff, but mainly I just enjoyed the fact of where I was, the roof of the world, the wind billowing through tiled windows and the place I'd come from a dizzying sprawl far below me. Yesterday I climbed a blasted cliff of ice and ancient stone to find a small temple at the top, built along a narrow ridge. But when you're on the ground or in the air the game often feels endless: clear and spacious, slopes and contours and steppes in every direction. You can race through this whole adventure and be done in four hours, probably less. And I mean size in a very specific sense. It's the sheer size of The Pathless that I love. Vast maps bring out the best in this sparse yet memorable adventure. |
